New Year, New Key West: Come Visit in January

New Year’s resolutions often revolve around the same topics: getting in shape, starting a new hobby, or finally doing some activity you’ve been putting off.

Here at Key West, we’re going after the whole enchilada.

While this year has been tough for many, Key West has used this time to undergo much-needed renovations, rebranding, and a general facelift.

While the frigid temperatures make their way around the country, the subtropical climate in Key West is going strong and ready for all visitors.

So, what is different about Key West in 2021?

New Seasonal Flights

If you’re coming from somewhere outside the southeast, then you’re probably going to be taking a plane. Lucky for you, there are plenty of new flights coming into the area.

United Airlines has announced non-stop flights from Houston while American Airlines has daily service from Boston, Orlando, and Tampa Bay. This is added onto the already existing non-stop flights with Philadelphia, Chicago, Charlotte, Newark, Dallas, Orlando, Miami, and Washington D.C.

Not to mention, Key West has also partnered with Aztec Airways for brand-new service from Fort Lauderdale. These flights are a bit different as it’s not your typical Boeing, but rather an air taxi that seats up to 8 people (meaning, you can book the entire plane with a small group), you can skip TSA via the private terminal, and you can park for free the entire duration of your stay. You can get in touch with us directly to book, as we are their partner on this new venture.

Enhanced Safety Measures

The days of stockpiling hand sanitizer and toilet paper are over (we hope), we’ve had plenty of practice and chances to enhance our safety and health measures.

Restaurants, hotels, resorts, bars, and businesses are all following strict protocols as outlined by health officials.

Masks are required indoors and all areas are regularly sanitized.

We also have something really, really cool.

As of Dec. 15th, a COVID-fighting robot will begin patrolling the airport, emitting high-intensity ultraviolet UV-C wavelength light designed to kill harmful pathogens in the air and on surfaces.

It is designed to remove 99.9% of pathogens, and we’re proud to be one of the first airports in the country to have such a special robot. While it usually operates after hours, you might be lucky enough to see it during your arrival.

Resort Expansions

Many resorts in Key West have made adjustments to allow for social distancing and give guests a better experience.

The Kimpton Key West has added two new boutique-style resorts, the Ridley House and Ella’s Cottages. The Ridley House is currently open while Ella’s Cottages are set to open in mid-February.

Both have been renovated with a number of features, such as improved pools, lounge areas, and more. Both are pet-friendly resorts that also offer continental breakfasts and complimentary bikes.

We are also getting ready for the opening of a brand-new resort called The Capitana Key West, complete with 75 balcony rooms, most with views of the Gulf of Mexico, and gorgeous suites with water views bit enough to fit the captain, first mate, and the rest of the crew (perfect for girl’s weekend getaways, bachelor parties, and family vacays.)

Outdoor Renovations

The Bahia Honda State Park is undergoing a nearly $3 million restoration of the Sandspur area. The mile-long beach, campgrounds, parking lot, and restroom facilities are receiving a much-needed fresh coat of paint.

The park has long been a hotspot for beautiful walks, shallow-water snorkeling, and swimming.

The Dry Tortugas National Park is also undergoing an important restoration. The historical lighthouse at the park is finally getting the full repairs that it needs.

Watersports

It wouldn’t be a trip to the beach without getting on a boat, would it?

The tourism council has put extra emphasis on how to enjoy watersports while also protecting the Keys’ local marine life.

That way, tourists can still come and enjoy fun outings without damaging the surrounding areas.
