In 1978, a San Franciscan named Gilbert Baker designed the first gay pride flag, showing off 8 bright colors. Over the years, a few colors dropped off from the original flag due to manufacturing issues, and the new flag has only six colors. However here at Key West, we’re proud to have the original design still waving in the sea breeze in our quaint downtown area. This, among many other things, shows Key West's embrace for the gay community. September 4-8th you can see Key West’s pride in full throttle – WomenFest will take place to celebrate lesbians and friends! Events include cocktail parties, crystal readings, fire eatings, swimming with mermaids, burlesque shows, drag shows, parties and dancing, pool parties, and much, much more! Check out the GayKeyWestfl.com website for full details.
