What to Know About Visiting Key West

The upward trend continues throughout the United States as the coronavirus doesn’t seem like it’s going away anytime soon.

The number of cases in Florida has exploded over the last month and is expected to cross the 300,000 threshold in the near future (or is probably closing in on 400,000 by the time of publication).

While neighboring Miami has turned into the new epicenter, the Keys have stayed relatively calm, registering less than 600 cases since the outbreak began.

What does that mean for your upcoming vacation? Should you bother coming down to Key West during the pandemic’s rise?

2. What to Expect

Even though we’re way down south, we’re still connected with what the rest of the country is doing.

That means, expect lots of hand sanitizer, masks everywhere, and plenty of signs encouraging hand-washing. Establishments are closing a bit earlier than normal this year, shutting down at 11 PM. That just means early to bed and early to rise is the best way to enjoy the most out of your Key West Vacation!

3. Exercise Caution

Even though the number of cases in the Florida Keys has remained low, that doesn’t mean you can take off your mask and run through every store. In fact, Key West has issued an even stricter mask law, now requiring everyone to wear a mask even when they’re outside

We all know that masks aren’t the most comfortable things to wear and can be even a bit more stifling when you’re in the summer heat. With temperatures set to be in the 90s for the next few weeks, you should think about your obligation to wear a mask.

Even though contracting the virus is much less likely outside, you should also make sure and maintain a safe distance while enjoying the beach.

Stay with your immediate group of family or friends and use social distancing to keep you and your family safe.

You Can Still Enjoy the Beach Though

Although you shouldn’t be around people on a daily basis, that doesn’t mean you can’t go outside and enjoy the lovely Florida weather and the beach itself.

Laying out, jumping in the water, tossing a football around, and more don’t require a large group to enjoy. You can still have fun with everyone in your immediate group.

Limited Events

While summer is often the time for fun events, government officials have already started canceling or closing things down.

Even though it’s not until October, Fantasy Fest has already been canceled. Some events, like the Key West Marlin Tournament, are still on at this moment.

However, most family events or other celebrations have been canceled this year and the ambiance won’t be quite what you may have expected.

Events May be Limited but Activities Aren’t

While you won’t find some of your favorite events this year, there are still plenty of activities for you and your family or friends to enjoy.

Yoga on the beach is a fun, relaxing way to get outside. Plus, you can stay socially distant and responsible while getting a great stretch in.

Don’t forget about scuba diving or snorkeling. Going with a few friends is the perfect way to really explore the depths of the ocean. You might even run into a pirate ship!

Without so much tourist or boat traffic the last few months, the oceans have never been cleaner so it’s the perfect time to explore.

For those that haven’t dived into the depths of the ocean before, why not get familiar with an underwater virtual tour?

Conclusion

At the end of the day, visiting Key West is your choice. If you are immune-compromised or have at-risk family members or friends, please carefully consider your decision to travel to Florida.

Ultimately, however, you can stay healthy and safe following the rules set in place and maintaining a safe distance from others. Use your best judgment when choosing your next vacation spot.
