How to NOT Be a Tourist in Key West

how to not be a tourist key west

Key West is a tourist’s paradise, nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. Its year-round sunshine and southern hospitality leave more than one falling at their feet. But what if you don’t want to follow the crowd? Want to take in the best that Key West has to offer without having to fight for a table for some average food? Here we give you five top tips on how NOT to be a tourist in the Conch Republic.

  1. Ditch the typical hotels - though Key West is known for offering a luxury hotel lifestyle, that doesn’t mean that you have to buy into it. There are a vast number of unique, alternative options that will give you an experience you’ll never forget. Rent a boutique room, stay in a boat, hire a tent, or even a hammock if you’re brave enough! You’re guaranteed to have an extraordinary story to tell.

  2. Rent a scooter or bicycle - many people do not bother renting personal transport when they stay in Key West, which is a mistake. By getting a scooter or a bicycle, you strike the perfect balance between freedom and mobility, enabling you to leave the crowds behind while you explore the hidden nooks and crannies of this island paradise.

  3. Remember what Key West is… and isn’t – yes, Key West has bars, yes - these bars are famous, yes, they are good. But bars are everywhere, and there’s only one Key West. Key West is nature – so see it! Not only are there a considerable number of State Parks around the Keys, but you can also visit the Deer Reserve or feed the famous Tarpon. Have an experience in nature that barhoppers don’t get.

  4. Window shop Duval Street - Duval Street is world-famous for a reason. The longest street in Key West is the definition of vibrant bursting life. Any hour of the day or night, it’s possible to find food, drinks, and a good party with vast crowds of partygoers flocking to its most well-known bars. This brings its complications. Scam T-shirt shops, jewelry, and cosmetic stores abound, their objective to rip off as many unsuspecting visitors as possible. It’s good to check out Duval Street, but when it comes to shopping, go off the beaten path for better prices.

  5. Research your restaurants - With some of the well-known eateries, not all is as it seems. Many that claim to provide local cuisine actually import the food on their menu from Asia. The same applies to 2x1 drinks offers or “bargain” specials. Some unscrupulous business owners have gained fame for watering down their beverages or substituting different, cheaper brands from those they claim to be using. Research is the best way to avoid falling into these traps, as well as the way to discover new, hidden gems.
